With a varied selection ranging from the luxurious sherry-rich 32-year-old to the bold 16-year-old expressions, each made with Mortlach Whisky’s signatory 2.81 distillation.
How It’s Made
Mortlach’s elaborate ageing process makes it a premium whisky with good reason. Its exclusive process combines double and triple-distilled batches, evolving into a whisky that is 2.81 times distilled, making this whisky truly one of a kind. Complexity does not mean this whisky muddles flavour, as many consider Mortlach whiskies to have some of the most poignant notes in each bottle.

Mortlach Special Release 2022 uses a multitude of casks and mixed maturation processes to result in a lovely golden whisky with decoratively dark packaging. The ageing process occurs in American oak casks for a brief time and then finishes its journey in a combination of port, virgin oak, and red Muscat casks. This Speyside dram is then bottled at 57.8% ABV.
The initial impressions of this whisky are comforting and rich savoury notes, like an elaborate vegetable medley with succulent smoked meats. This melds into a peppery, dry, fruity finish of red wine, clove, and syrupy ginger. A dash of water becomes the bridge between each flavour on the palate, lifting this moody and complex dram to new heights.
Mortlach 1991 32-year-old Signatory Vintage 35th Anniversary #4241 hails from the vaults of Signatory Vintage. This whisky was distilled in 1991 from a single cask and luxuriously matured for 32 years in a single Oloroso sherry hogshead. It is a cask-strength whisky that you can experience straight-from-the-cask tasting completely unaltered. This includes no-chill filtration or any artificial colouring. Mortlach has mastered the art of ageing in sherry barrels to develop the richest flavour.
This whisky is a deep amber, and its maturation over three decades has created a sumptuously syrupy spirit that truly showcases the bready goodness of the barley. Prominent notes include dried plums, roasted nuts, and tobacco. Its deep and dry texture is a favourite among many whisky drinkers.
These are just two of the fantastic Mortlach options Royal Mile Whiskies offers.

Mortlach was the first distillery to be licensed in the whisky heartland of Dufftown. In fact it took until 1886 when the former distillery manager of Mortlach, William Grant, established Glenfiddich that another distillery was opened in the town. It wasn't all plain sailing during this time though and the distillery was used as a brewery and even a church after being gutted for equipment by the Grant brothers for the nearby Aberlour. It took until 1851 for Mortlach to start producing again and it has never looked back since.
For most its life Mortlach has been an essential building block for some of Scotland's most famed blends. It's due to this that until recently it wasn't the most widely available single malt. The releases that were available became cult favourites and it was decided to focus on Mortlach as a single malt whisky with three new premium releases.
A proposal to build a extension to Mortlach distillery, an exact mirror of the current distillery was proposed but has now been put on hold. It's an interesting time for Mortlach and we're keeping a close eye on what may come from this beloved distillery.
