If there's a distillery in Scotland that will get a reaction out of people it's Laphroaig. What that reaction will be however is up for debate. Their pungent whisky has just as many admirers as it does detractors and the people who make it wouldn't want it any other way. Laphroaig is famed for is peaty, medicinal nature and thrives on being a whisky which may not be to everyone's tastes.

Like many distilleries in Scotland the true origins of Laphroaig are a little bit fuzzy. Illicit distilling was commonplace on Islay in the early 1800s as many of the local farmers would use their surplus barley to craft whisky for a little extra income. The start of Laphroaig as we know it came about in 1815 when the Johnston brothers (Alexander and Donald) founded the distillery after the exceptional spirit they were making started to become well known. In 1836 Donald bought Alexander out of the business and took sole ownership. However, 11 years later Donald would perish in a terrible accident at the distillery where he fell into a boiling kettle of pot ale.
The distillery then passed to Donald's son and the Laphroaig distillery stayed in the ownership of the Johnston family right up until 1954. Ian Hunter was the last member of the family to run the distillery and was notoriously protective of Laphroaig's secrets. The person that he chose to succeed him was his own PA - Elizabeth 'Bessie' Williamson. Bessie had worked closely with Ian for years and knew the workings of the distillery better than anyone. When she became the Managing Director she was one of the very few women to be in charge of a distillery in Scotland.
Since then Laphroaig as only continued to grow and is now the biggest selling Islay single malt whisky in the world, not bad for a whisky which splits opinions so dramatically.
