What happens when whisky meets a wine cask? It can bring ripe berries and plums, a touch of tannin and spice or an unexpected twist to a familiar distillery character. There’s no single style to pin down: much depends on the wine the cask held, the whisky going into it and how the two develop together.
From red wine barriques to casks with a more unusual history, wine cask matured whisky offers plenty of variety for curious drinkers.
What Is Wine Cask Matured Whisky?
Wine cask matured whisky is aged, or finished, in oak casks that have previously held wine. The casks can influence the whisky’s colour, aroma and flavour, contributing notes of red fruit, berries, plum, spice and sometimes a drier, tannic edge.
The outcome depends on the type of wine, the oak and the length of maturation, as well as the character of the whisky itself. A wine cask can complement the spirit’s existing flavours or introduce a contrast that makes the result particularly distinctive. And while red wine casks are common in this category, different wines and casks can produce very different results.
