Ben Nevis Whisky

Ben Nevis distillery, sitting at the foot of its namesake, the highest mountain in Britain, creates whisky that has a distinctly thick toffee and fig characteristic. It does very well in sherry casks, adding a fruity spice and a chewy element. They run a certain amount of peated spirit that creates their smoky MacDonald’s Traditional bottling, emulating the original style of the distillery.

On the outskirts of Fort William, the distillery takes its water from the Ben Nevis mountain itself, siphoning from lochs that are largely filled by pure snow-melt water.

Since ‘Long John’ MacDonald first licensed the distillery, Ben Nevis has had a number of peaks and troughs in production. By the end of the 19th Century, John’s son Peter had created a strong brand out of the distillery, and build a second unit next door, simply called ‘Nevis’, to run alongside. During this golden age, as many as 200 people were employed by the distillery.

Unfortunately the 20th Century saw the distillery fall on harder times, closing the second unit, selling off its assets and only running the main distillery intermittently. It wasn’t until after World War II that Joseph Hobbs, then owner, added a Coffey still and began stable production once more, in both malt and grain spirits (the first distillery in Scotland to produce both), in 1955.

Again, after this boost in production, the late 70s and through the 80s were riddled with closures and refurbishments, along with the removal of the Coffey still, until the Japanese distiller Nikka bought the distillery in 1989, and began the process of creating the Ben Nevis brand as it is today. It has not found a massive market in the UK, but the 10 year old has won multiple awards, and both the single malt and blended whiskies bearing the Ben Nevis brand have become hugely popular in Japan.
