Few distilleries do peat smoke quite like Ardbeg. Made on the south coast of Islay, Ardbeg single malt is known for its incredibly bold smoky character, but there’s plenty going on beneath the peat: citrus, sweet fruit, sea spray and spice.
At Royal Mile Whiskies, we’re big fans of Ardbeg. Our Edinburgh shop was the first to be named an Ardbeg Embassy, reflecting our long-standing enthusiasm for this much-loved Islay distillery.
We’ve got a stellar selection of Ardbeg single malts available online or in our shops. From the ever popular Ardbeg 10 Year Old to older and more collectible releases like the Ardbeg Lord of the Isles, there’s plenty for peat fans to get excited about.
What Does Ardbeg Whisky Taste Like?
Ardbeg is famous for its heavily peated malt, giving its whisky a powerful smoky character. Yet the smoke is only part of the story, when you look beyond it you will often find bright citrus, sweet white fruit, sea spray, dried fruit, chocolate, tobacco and warming spice alongside oily or leathery notes in some bottlings.
The balance shifts from expression to expression. The classic Ardbeg 10 Year Old is an excellent introduction to the distillery’s house style while limited releases explore different ages, cask types and flavour combinations. If you enjoy a whisky with plenty of personality, Ardbeg rarely does things by halves.
The History of Ardbeg
Founded: 1815
Owner: LVMH
Production status: Operational
Annual production capacity: approximately 1.1 million litres
Ardbeg’s story began in 1815, when the McDougall family established the distillery on Islay’s southern coast. Like several Islay distilleries, it became part of an industry that supplied smoky malt whisky for blending, helping build the island’s reputation for heavily peated spirit.
The distillery experienced its share of difficult years as tastes and demand changed. Production stopped in 1981, before restarting on a limited scale in 1989 under Allied Distillers, primarily to supply the blending trade. Ardbeg closed again in 1996, leaving its future uncertain.
In 1997, The Glenmorangie Company acquired the distillery and began a new chapter for the brand. Ardbeg had already developed a devoted following among single malt enthusiasts and the challenge was to bring it back while preserving the distinctive character that made it so popular.
With younger spirit taking time to mature, older stocks helped sustain the range. The much-loved Ardbeg 17 Year Old became an important release during this period, followed by the Young series (Very Young, Still Young and Almost There) which led towards the launch of Ardbeg 10 Year Old in its new-era form.
Since then, Ardbeg has built a formidable reputation among peat enthusiasts and collectors alike. Its range combines core bottlings with sought-after limited editions, including experiments with different cask maturations. LVMH has owned Ardbeg since 2004, and the distillery continues to attract a loyal following around the world.
