Glenlivet Whisky

Glenlivet is famed for its flavours of meadow flowers and soft fruits. Older examples are often more sherried with a fuller, deeper profile. Glenlivet is famed for being one of the first distilleries to legally acquire a licence to distil whisky, with their founder George Smith getting one in 1824. From this foundation Glenlivet has become one of the biggest selling single malts in the world.

When visiting Glenlivet distillery one of the many things to keep a look out for is the pair of antique pistols housed in the visitor centre. These pistols were purchased by distillery founder George Smith after he purchased a licence for his new distillery. Fearing repercussions from the illicit distillers that populated the hills all around him he carried them wherever he went. Luckily he never had to use them to defund himself or his precious distillery.

Glenlivet set itself apart when it was first made is a much lighter, fruitier style than that of the other whiskies being made at the time. In this regards little has changed at Glenlivet and their lively and fresh whisky is enjoyed the world over - especially in American where is has been the biggest selling single malt for a very long time.

For a brief period in 2014 Glenlivet become the biggest selling malt in the world, toppling Glenfiddich after 50 years. It has now lost that title but they continue to grow their range and impress with their limited releases. Many of our staff list it as one of their favourite whiskies.
