What Is Single Cask Whisky?
Most whisky is created by combining spirit from different casks to achieve a particular flavour and style. Single cask whisky takes a different approach: the whisky comes from one individual cask which allows its unique character to take centre stage. As whisky matures, the spirit interacts with the wood developing flavours and aromas over time. No two casks mature in exactly the same way, so even whiskies from the same distillery that are filled at a similar time, can develop very different personalities. Each cask also yields a limited number of bottles depending on its size, the whisky lost to evaporation and the strength at bottling.
Many single cask whiskies are bottled at cask strength, preserving the spirit at or close to its natural strength when removed from the cask. Others are reduced with water to a more approachable bottling strength. Either way, single cask releases offer a chance to explore the individual character of a whisky.
