Glenkinchie is a full-bodied lowland whisky with a floral and very grassy character. It has long been marketed as 'The Edinburgh Malt' the Glenkinchie distillery is located in Pencaitland, only 14 miles from Edinburgh and is currently the the closest remaining distillery to Scotland's capital. Glenkinchie distillery has its very own bowling green, however, it's been many years since this was used.

The Lowlands have long been one of the less producing whisky regions. Even now with a whisky resurgence across the globe only a couple of new Lowland distilleries have opened their doors. Glenkinchie is one of the few that has operated without too many interruptions (although it was at one point converted into a sawmill) .
Although Glenkinchie has the largest still in Scotland for producing its whisky, which would promote a very light style, the production methods are tailored to add more depth to the spirit. This depth of flavour is one of the main reasons it was selected to join Diageo's "Classic Malts" range in 1988. As such is has become a very well known whisky around the world.
There is a very good chance that Glenkinchie may have to relinquish its title as the 'Edinburgh Malt' as all the signs point to a distillery opening in the City itself in the near future. However, its certainly given the millions of tourists that visit Edinburgh every year a warm welcome when they just had to see a working distillery.
The Glenkinchie Range at Royal Mile Whiskies
Our Glenkinchie collection features bottles at various price points from varying milestones.
Here are a few ages to consider:
Glenkinchie 12 Year Old – A dry and nutty spirit that produces a delightful freshness of flowers, notes, and grass to the nose. The herbal notes really make this a refreshing dram to enjoy.
Glenkinchie 16 Year Old – A limited released bottle as part of the four corners of Scotland bottlings. It is a fragrant, fresh and elegant bottle with a smooth texture to it.
Glenkinchie 27 Year Old – A delightfully flavourful spirit that has been well-aged in a combination of American and European barrels and butts. Expect the typical fruity and grassy notes commonly found in Glenkinchie whiskies.
This distillery is commonly known as the Edinburgh Distillery, but it’s become more than that thanks to its private collections like the Glenkinchie Distillers Edition 2023.
The palate starts off sweet and malty, becomes spicy with dried fruit hints, and finishes long, oaky, and lightly pepper spicy. A complex profile to be enjoyed.
