Renowned for its sweet, chocolatey notes and rich spices, Glen Garioch offers a truly unique drinking experience.
If you’re looking for a single malt that’s full of character and complexity, Glen Garioch is the perfect choice.
Our great selection will definitely catch your fancy, with both independent and official bottlings.
Glen Garioch takes you through a soft, thick texture that carries a sweet, chocolatey butterscotch character, with ripe fruits and an intensity of rich spices. With age, heather, peaty and floral notes are more present, reflecting a change towards a less peaty character in the mid Eighties. It remains an intensely malty and rich dram that benefits from a generous bottling strength.

The granite distillery of Glen Garioch is found outside Aberdeen in the farming town of Old Meldrum. It's an appropriate place for a whisky distillery as the 'garioch' is an area once known as 'Aberdeenshire's granary'. There are claims that, while the foundation date officially records the beginning of production, the distillery was making whisky well before this - a claim that, if ever proven, would make the distillery the oldest in Scotland.
The whisky produced was very well renowned in the blending industry, and its ownership by a series of popular blenders ensured the distillery survived, even at some of the worst moments for whisky when many distilleries were failing. It has shut down twice in its long life, both for only two years. DCL closed the distillery in favour of Brora in 1968 when the limited water source restricted any possible expansions, but was bought and reopened by Stanley Morrison with a newly discovered source.
Morrison actually increased production with this new source, as well as installing a heat recovery system (similar to that found at Bowmore) which heated tomato-growing greenhouses nearby. 1995 saw the distillery mothballed again, only to return in 1997 with a full refurbishment, but lacking both the maltings and the peat influence in the whisky that had added a signature smoky tang. Today, the modern style of Glen Garioch has a following large enough to demand the full production of the distillery in single malt releases.
