Unlike the other Islay distilleries, Bunnahabhain's classic spirit is very lightly peated more, akin to a rich, Highland malt. Fresh aromatic notes float over the little bit of smoke, with a malty sweetness and a fruit and nut quality. Older expressions develop a big, chewy body and lots of toffee, cherry and chocolate orange tones. There are a couple of heavily peated varieties that display the distillery’s historic style from a century ago.

Built in 1881 in an otherwise desolate area of Islay, the small village of Bunnahabhain (pronounced boon-a-hav-en) grew up to serve the new distillery. This happened pretty instantly for the immediate area, with housing, new roads and even a pier being built along with the distillery to accommodate the business needs.
While many Islay whiskies found a strong presence as a single malt, for their rather unique coastal and peaty qualities, Bunnahabhain got stuck into the blending industry, providing a core malt for The Famous Grouse, Cutty Sark, Black Bottle and three R&B blends. This trend continues today, leaving their single malt range simple but elegant, with three core age statements, and a couple of bottles to celebrate the history and original style of the distillery.

Bunnahabhain 40 Year Old – This is 1 of 743 bottles, it offers up tropical fruit, dried fruits and spice on the palate. Bottled as a 40 year old in May 2003.
