Braeval was established in 1973 as 'Braes of Glenlivet' by previous Chivas owner Seagram's and it was designed to be one of the first fully automated distilleries ideally operated by only person. Located in Chapletown, outside Ballindaloch it takes compete advantage of the local water sources from Ladder Hills, Preenie and Katie's Wells. It also is one of the highest situated distilleries in Scotland sitting at 350 metres above sea level.
Chivas Brothers renamed the distilery Braeval in 1995 to distinguish it from The Glenlivet. Despite steadily growing in capacity over the years it was mothballed by new owners Pernod Ricard in 2002 for eight years before reopening in 2008. Braeval still remains a key component of the company blends such as Chivas, 100 Pipers and Passport.
