The Trinidadian distillery Caroni went underappreciated in the immediate years following its closure in 2003, but was slowly chewed over by discerning rum fans across the world who fell in love with its unusually heavy, industrial character. Most of the remaining stocks of Caroni were divided across Europe between budding brokers and independent bottlers who played a critical role in building the rum's reputation in the subsequent decades. Casks are thinning out across the world so it is a pleasure to be able to feature both our first ever Caroni and first rum in the Dormant Distillery Company series.

Throughout the of history of Royal Mile Whiskies, our journey has been marked with a passion for whisky that led us to bottling the finest whiskies under both the Royal Mile Whiskies and Dormant Distillery Company titles. The latter features bottlings from closed distilleries which were released between 1997 to 2007. This range has then lain "dormant" until now.

Distilled on the final day of the 20th century on column stills. this cask of Caroni is a faithful example of the distillery's heavy style with rubbery, menthol and aniseed at the forefront after 24 years in a refill barrel. A great snapshot of rum history and a reminder how unique and fascinating this style of rum has become.

Tasting Notes by The Dormant Distillery Company

Nose: A fragrant nose with rubber, lavender, anise, demerara then barbeque firepits, foliage, raisins and plasters.

Palate: An immediately spicy menthol charged palate combined with petrol, paints and dark chocolate. There is a surprising elegance at the end of the palate which emerges more with a drop of water.

Finish: Tarry and chewy with herbal notes then pak choi, blackcurrants and a faint vanilla sweetness.
