Now known as the most northerly distillery on mainland Scotland, Wolfburn is currently enjoying a prosperous second life after its former building lay in ruins for almost 150 years. Producing a characterful light and fruity spirit, Wolfburn has quickly become one of the northern highlands most interesting producers.

The original Wolfburn distillery was founded in 1821 on the outskirts of Thurso by William Smith. Its name derived, as many other distilleries have, from the local water source (known as 'burn' in Scots). After a short period the distillery became the largest in Caithness (in 1826 it was producing the equivalent of 125,000 litres) and continued production before ceasing and ultimately closing for good at some point in the 1860s. The first Ordinance Survey map of Great Britain was published in 1872 and notably labels the distilllery's buildings tragically as 'ruins'.
Wolfburn's story would remain silent for almost 150 years until 2011 when a private consortium, Aurora Brewing Ltd, sought to re-establish and rebuild the distillery within short proximity to its original buildings (only parts of ruins remain). The distillery was then designed and built over the next two years before production finally commenced on 25th January 2013, Burn's Night.
The distillery primarily produces unpeated spirit but since 2014 has also produced peated batches. Its production strictly adheres to long fermentations and slow distillations ot craft a smooth but characterful spirit.
Their first release, Northland has become their flagship bottling and is all matured in American oak quarter casks. Further editions such as Aurora and Langskip focus solely on either sherry casks and first fill bourbon casks.

Wolfburn Langskip – A beautiful single malt that has been matured in a first fill bourbon cask and bottled at natural cask strength. Bursting with rich and sweet flavours.
Wolfburn Northland – A slightly smoky Highland malt. This spirit has been smoothed out by the use of American oak quarter casks during its maturation, creating a delightful dram experience.
Wolfburn Aurora – This bottle is a combination of American oak casks and ex-sherry casks, which makes a fruity, spicy treat to enjoy.
