Until recently Talisker had long been the only distillery on the romantic Isle of Skye. Opened in 1930 its history hasn't been an easy one by any stretch of the imagination. Over the years it has passed through many owners, some of which were perhaps slightly nefarious in their dealings. However, it has overcome them all to become one of the best known single malt whiskies in the entire world.

Talisker's founders, Hugh and Kenneth MacAskill, were very much landlords of their time. The Highland clearances, a practice of moving low income crofters and replacing them with sheep or other more profitable means, were in full effect during the early 1800s. The brothers took all they could from this and founded Talisker distillery in Carbost on Skye with little experience of the distilling trade. The venture did not work out for them and the North of Scotland bank took possession of the distillery. It was sold on a few times with one of the owners, John Anderson, even being imprisoned for fraud for selling casks that were never made at the distillery. It wasn't until 1880 that Talisker ended up in hands that knew how run it effectively.
Up until 1928 Talisker were triple distilling their whisky, which is quite unusual for whisky made on one of Scotland's islands. After this though all the whisky made at the distillery has been made in the traditional Scottish way of double distillation. The distillery also had a large fire in 1960 which shut down production for two years. Since then Talisker has only gone from strength to strength and is now known around the world as a fearsome single malt.
Talisker is also a big part in several of the Johnnie Walker blends and it has more than earned it's place among the other whiskies in the classic malts range. Talisker's wild, untamed nature makes it a whisky that everyone should experience.
