The Isle of Mull may only have one distillery but it produces two very different single malts. Ledaig is a peated spirit which is in stark contrast to the gentle Tobermory malt also made on the island. The distillery has roots as one of Scotland's oldest but it has faced a challenging history with many closures along the way which has made the supply and consistency of the whisky quite varied at times.

Interestingly enough when Tobermory distillery was originally opened in 1798 by John Sinclair it was actually named Ledaig. It's thought that the first spirit produced there had a big peat influence and so the whisky made under the name Ledaig nowadays keeps this big peaty flavour profile.
The distillery has faced many troubling times over the years and its stills stopped on more than one occasion. There have even been threats to the buildings with plans to convert them into holiday accommodation thankfully not coming to pass. In fact, at one point a local cheese company used the facilities to store their wares. Luckily there is no cheese on site these days.
It was annouced in 2017 that the distillery would be closing for two years for major renovations. The upgrade is mostly focused on making the distillery more of a tourism hot spot and it is said that the lack of production will not hamper the availability of the malts produced there. Only time will tell if this is the case.
Ledaig Is A Taste Of The Isle Of Mull
The Isle clearly influences this whisky, as its seaside savouriness shines through its notable scents and flavours, including sweet, smokey, crushed pepper and briny coastal meadows. Most batches will have notes of liquorice and clove alongside a powerfully earthy base. Its natural colour is a vibrant gold, rich like the history of the Scottish Isles.
Check out these three options we recommend from this lineup:
Ledaig 1995 29-year-old Westie Sponge Ed 4 is a cask-strength whisky from a sherry cask. This bottle is a nod to the older versions of Ledaig whisky, which were more subtle in their distinction to the lightness of Tobermory. It sits at 52% ABV and is considered mildly peated, yet the sherry adds a beautifully complex layer to this more traditional Scottish highland malt.
Ledaig 2012 whisky is another cask-strength whisky that’s unchilfiltered with natural colouring. It’s considered a limited edition, peaty single malt from Tobermory Distillery. This vintage whisky takes a wild ride of scents and flavours, including toasty heather, pine, eucalyptus, and melon rinds. It’s aged in Bordeaux red wine casks to give the perfect sweet and smoky balance that counteracts its heavily earthy finish.
Mull (Ledaig) 18-year-old Macbeth First Murderer is a heavily peated single malt aged in American oak barrels. It is part of Livingstone’s Macbeth Collection of Scotch Whiskies and received a limited release of only 2100 bottles. The stunning artwork for this bottle is by renowned illustrator Sir Quentin Blake and notes by writer Dave Broom, which in part read, “pallid, with a reek of woodsmoke and tallow candles.” These words fittingly describe this whisky’s full-bodied, fiery taste, clearly inspired by the sand and sea of Mull.
