Royal Mile Whiskies has some fantastic bottlings for those who are partial to the peatiness of Campbeltown, including a good few from Kilkerran that often pass through our shelves.
The whisky made at Glengyle distillery is known as Kilkerran, not Glengyle. This is because although the distillery was sold in 2000 the trademark for releasing whisky named Glengyle was retained by the previous owners. Confusing? Perhaps, but it hasn't held back Kilkerran in the slightest. In fact we can't think of many 'new' whiskies that have a more enthusiastic and devout following.

The original Glengyle distillery was built in 1872 and produced whisky right up until 1925. After this various elements of the distillery we sold off over the years (the warehouse were sold to become a petrol station in 1929) and it looked like whisky might never be produced here again. This is until 2000 when J &: A Mitchell's acquired the distillery for just this purpose.
The distillery premises wasn't much more than a stone, shell so the new owners had to go about fitting it from scratch. Interestingly the new stills were purchased from the defunct Ben Wyvis distillery. They were slightly re-worked to have a smoother shape which would lend to creating a fruity, smooth spirit.
Over the course of the years Kilkerran has been displaying its progress with limited editon 'Work in Progress' bottlings. These have become cult favourites and in 2016 their first core range bottling, a 12 year old single malt, hit the shelves. The 'Work in Progress' bottlings have revealed that Kilkerran isn't shying away from trying be slightly different for other whiskies out there.
Our Kilkerran Collection
A brand of whisky like no other, Kilkerran produces a golden-rich appeal that showcases the peatiness of Campbeltown.
Depending on the age and batch, this whisky can vary in milkiness and creaminess but never falters in the complexity of flavours from port, bourbon, and sherry casks.
Kilkerran 16-Year-Old - This whisky was aged in 2004 in bourbon barrels and creates a complex contrast of bruised herbs and citrus rinds that bloom into a silky and nutty breadiness reminiscent of lemon curd pie. There’s a peppery smoke that showcases perfectly the soft peat of Campbeltown whiskies.
Kilkerran 12-Year-Old - The introduction begins with a strong nose of warm oak and fired marshmallows and a soft bite of almond paste and syrupy maraschino cherries. Smoke is much more subtle, blending seamlessly with toffee and buttery crumble, leaving an oily texture on the palate.
