This small farm distillery dates back to at least 1763, and is one of the lasting legacies of the Scotch whisky industry. Like many of Scotland's distilleries it was closed, and the workings removed back in the huge crash 1920's. Unlike most distilleries that suffer such a fate, Glenturret has been revived. If true, the claim of being founded before 1763 would make Glenturret Scotland's oldest surviving distillery.

As whisky partnerships go they don't come much closer than this. Glenturret walks hand in hand with The Famous Grouse. For generations Glenturret has been the main malt component of the Famous Grouse and the distillery has now become its spiritual (pardon the pun) home. In recent years Glenturret has started to push into the market as a single malt, forming a identity of its own.
Although it claims to be the oldest distillery in Scotland the Glenturret that we know today came about in 1959. James Fairlie bought he distillery and re-opened it after a long closure (it was closed for 30 years). He bought equipment from Tullibardine distillery, which was being refurbished at the time and set about restarting the distillery.
Today Glenturret is owned by the Edrington Group and is much better known as a single malt. If your ever visiting the distillery make sure to get a photo with the memorial to Towser, the most infamous distillery cat there ever was! it's said he managed to 'take care of' over 30,000 mice during his tyrannical rule of Glenturret distillery.
