Cutty Sark. One of the most recognisable blended whiskies in the world. It's also, perhaps, the reason why Glenrothes isn't better known as a single malt whisky across the globe. For generations the whisky produced was almost exclusively absconded for blends. This changed in 1994 when the distillery began to release the whisky as a single malt. Since then the distillery has gained a devout following.

It's amazing to look back and see that the Glenrothes distillery almost didn't happen. Although the plans were in place a financial crises almost doomed the distillery before even a single drop of whisky was produced. Luckily a timely loan from the United Free Presbyterian Church of Knockando helped steady the ship and the distillery was built.
A sad historical coincidence is that the first spirit flowed through the stills of Glenrothes on the day the Tay Rail Bridge collapsed (the 28th December 1879). it is also important to note that the distillery is located in the Glen of Rothes in Speyside rather than in the town of Glenrothes in Fife. Many whisky fans have been confused by this fact through the years.
It has long held the status of being a 'Top Dressing' malt, a phrase which means a malt which is used to polish off a blended whisky. In recent years, however, it has forged a reputation as a high quality single malt., employing a unusual vintage release style. The vintage releases reflect on the ownership of the distillery; Berry Brothers and Rudd are the oldest Wine retailers in the United Kingdom.
