The founding of Glenfiddich is part of whisky folklore. The machinery which was brought in was bought from the Cardhu Distillery and the founder, William Grant, had previously managed Mortlach distillery. To this day Glenfiddich is still in the hands of the Grant family and they have made Glenfiddich one of the biggest selling malt whiskies worldwide. To make this happen Glenfiddich has been transformed into one of the largest distilleries in Scotland, producing around 13 million litres of spirit a year.
Without too much exaggeration Glenfiddich can be seen as the whisky that launched single malt as a category. In the 1960's while other distilleries were simply selling their product to the large blending companies Glenfiddich began to export their "Pure Single Malt" around the world. It was this innovative thinking that has shaped much of the whisky world that we know today.
Although being one of the largest distilleries in Scotland Glenfiddich isn't shy when it comes to trying the new and interesting. It was the first distillery in Scotland to open a visitor centre in 1969. It is the only distillery to employ a Solera cask system, which is used for their 15 year old expression. In late 2016 they launched an experimental range of whiskies which included an expression of Glenfiddich influenced by an IPA. Even after all these years Glenfiddich have not lost their love for trying something new.
