Dalwhinnie is aromatic but surprisingly dry on the nose, with a heathery note that some people hold up as being distinctively Highland. While the earthy heather takes onto the palate, the dryness is replaced by sweet, almost sticky, malt and honey notes with vanilla, spice and citrus, especially in Distillers Editions. A little smoke is often at the end, but is always subtle.

The consortium of local businessmen that built Dalwhinnie originally named it Strathspey, but due to a series of financial difficulties the distillery changed hands several times, only being renamed Dalwhinnie by the second owners. It was the first foreign-owned scotch distillery when it was sold at auction to the third set of owners, Cook & Bernheimer, who were one of America's largest distillers. The distillery changed hands again before finally coming to rest with DCL in 1926, who went on to form Diageo.
Diageo saw the distillery through a fire and a number of refurbishments, opening a visitor centre in 1991 shortly after they added the Dalwhinnie 15 to their 'Classic Malts' range, representing the traditional flavour profile of the whiskies made in the Highland region.
Dalwhinnie holds a couple of records. It is known as the coldest settlement in the UK, having an average temperature of just 6'C, meaning that the distillery is frequently isolated by poor winter weather amid huge snow banks. It is also recorded as the highest distillery in Scotland, at 355 metres above sea level. In fact, Braeval is about the same height as Dalwhinnie, but missed out on the title when the latter claimed it for themselves first.

Shop a fantastic range of whiskies from amongst our selection. Our purchasing team has been careful to pick single malts that properly capture the flavourful, dry notes and earthy taste of Dalwhinnie.
Here are just some of the bottles that you can order from our online store:
Dalwhinnie 15 Year Old – A bourbon aged fruity offering that still carries the weightiness that you’d expect of Dalwhinnie, while still being smooth enough to make for easy drinking.
Dalwhinnie Distillers Edition – This is one of the Dalwhinnie ranges that does not use one of the marquee ageing years. A great blend of aroma and sweet taste, making for an exceptionally smooth single malt.
If you or a loved one is particularly fond of this brand, we also have some specialist Dalwhinnie bottles, such as the 30 Year Old Special Release. These collectables can be bought online like the rest of our products, with the same fast and reliable delivery.
We’d also recommend reaching out to the team if you’re interested in a specific bottle from this range.
