For a time Brora was the most peated whisky in mainland Scotland. Typically a big, oily and peaty dram, Brora displays a very deeply textured body with persistent smoke, a certain minerality and a vegetative base. With increasing age in the remaining stock, notes of vanilla fudge, oak and leather come through as the smoke fades. A few editions have a sherry influence that brings fruit and spices into the mix. A desert island dram.

Originally called Clynelish, the distillery was one of the first in Scotland to be purpose built for single malt rather than for blending purposes. The origin of the distillery is somewhat dark, as the Marquis of Stafford (and later, Duke of Sutherland) build the distillery following some of the worst forced evictions in Scotland, as part of an economic experiment. Those that found themselves settling on this land were put to work on projects like the distillery.
As demands for blended whisky increased in the 1960s, DCL decided that it would be easier to keep up with production if they just built a whole new distillery next door, rather than trying to expand Clynelish. So in 1968, what is generally understood to be one of the worst looking distilleries ever built was opened. Confusingly enough until 1975 these two distilleries operated in tandem as Clynelish-A and Clynelish-B, which was odd as the styles were totally different. Finally someone saw sense and created a law that two distilleries could not have the same (or very similar) names, and the original Clynelish was renamed 'Brora' after its hometown.
Brora was mothballed, along with so many other distilleries, in 1983, following the 'Whisky Loch' of the late 1970s, where there was a huge surplus of stock on the market. The stills are still there, so technically Brora could start producing again tomorrow although this doesn't seem to be part of Diageo's plans. Currently the limited remaining stocks are being released annually as part of the Special Releases range, fetching upwards of £1000 per botle.
