A Storied Highland Whisky
Bottled by vintage, rather than an age statement, Balblair has three core vintages at a time. As one batch finishes, the master distiller selects the casks that best capture the essence of Balblair for the next vintage. The younger, bourbon cask releases have citrus fruits, florals and honey with a hint of a sour tang. Older and sherried vintages add in a rich depth of red fruit, chocolate and spices.

Balblair is one of the oldest distilleries still in existence today. Well, that’s not quite true, as the distillery itself was rebuilt half a mile up the road, after 100 years of production, to take advantage of the Inverness and Ross-shire railway line. However, in that first century, they had found such quality in their water source that, instead of using the new local waters, the distillery extended their siphon and continued to use the original source at the Allt Dearg burn.
When Inver House bought the distillery in 1996, bottlings were intermittent, but the distillery still gained a much stronger following upon the release of their 16 year old. In 2007, the bottlings were fully rebranded and the vintage release system was established, with consistent availability and a quality that quickly began winning global awards across their range.
Among these awards, Balblair has won our own Spirit of Whisky Fringe Award in 2008 with the 1989 vintage, and again in 2016 with the 1990 vintage.

The Balblair 21-year-old is a must-have for any whisky cabinet. Matured in both American oak ex-bourbon and Spanish Oloroso sherry casks, this dram is elegantly sherried and reminds us of classic vintage releases from previous years such as 1990 and 1999.
If you’re after a beautiful balance of age and vibrancy, the Balblair 15-year-old is an excellent pick. It brings together bright citrus, creamy toffee, and a subtle spiciness.
