Bucking the stereotypical profile of the Highland and Speyside regions, Ardmore makes a moderately peated whisky. Far from the sea spray and oily fish of Islay, Ardmore takes on a woodier, rich and dry smoke. It tends to blend the bonfire notes into stone fruit, biscuits and honey, with creamy vanillas for a very well rounded dram. Cask finished editions highlight spices and red fruit in the mix.

William Teacher & Sons created Ardmore, with Adam Teacher at the head of the venture, to create a core whisky for their Teacher's blend. Ardmore is still the principal component of the blend today. It was built at the highest point of the Northern Rail line between Aberdeen and Inverness, taking advantage of the combination of transport links, a high quality water source and a good quantity of local barley.
Ardmore has not found any great fame as a single malt, having a majority of production reserved for blending and only two stills until 1955, when another two were added to keep up with demand, then again, in 1974, the number was doubled to 8 in total. The greater capacity allows them a little more freedom for their single malts, and the range now covers their core releases that capture the heart of Ardmore, a 25 year old which highlights the complexity of the more mature spirit, a port finished bottling that emphasises the fruity characteristics, and even a rare, unpeated edition known as Ardlair. While these single malts are still not particularly known globally, they have created a dedicated following that thrives on this unusual peated Highland malt.
Anybody who feels at home with a peaty Islay dram will likely find a familiar, yet unique, fondness for Ardmore. If Ardmore is your gentle introduction to a heavier peat influence, the sweet-peat of Ailsa Bay may suit you well. Or, to delve deeper into the peat, a salty, oily smoke can be found mixing with a fruity note in drams like Kilchoman Sanaig, Bowmore 15 and Ardbeg Uigeadail.
