Sweden is still a relatively new player when it comes to distilling whisky. Their first distillery, Mackmyra only opened for business in 1999. Since then though the nation has gone from strength to strength.
Sweden now has seven distilleries with more planned to start production and with innovative people, like the Box Distillery in the north of the country, we're sure to see more of them.
Mackmyra were the ones that started it all when it comes to Swedish whisky and continue to lead the way. Whether it is using juniper to smoke their barley or building an eco-friendly distillery that harnesses the power of gravity, they have continued to innovate the industry. Their sweet and spicy whiskies have begun to be seen in whisky stores all over the world. Their success is a testament to the passion they have for making whisky.
Another Swedish distillery which is making waves is the Box Distillery based in northern Sweden. Their distillery is based where an old wooden box factory once stood and this is where they take their name from. Box have taken pride in only using the finest Swedish ingredient and making sure that their whisky is produced in a traditional, natural way. They're already generating a lot of buzz and have been called 'the most exciting new distillery in the world.'
