The story of Glendronach started in 1826 when a partnership of local farmers set up the Glendronach Distillery Company, led by the charismatic James Allerdice. The whisky proved popular and business was good with the whisky was being sold all over the United Kingdom. This was until 1837 when a huge fire broke out at the distillery, which almost destroyed it entirely. This led to many years on uncertainty and the bankruptcy of James Allerdice. The distillery was resurrected in 1852 and passed through four different owners in the next 60 years. One notable sale of Glendronach was in 1916 when it was purchased by The Crown. However, whisky was never produced when it was in Government control. After this the distillery was bought by the famous Captain Charles Grant (a man of great distilling heritage being the fifth son of William Grant) in 1920. The next sale wasn't until 1960 when it was purchased by the Teacher's group, later to become Allied distillers. Allied made the decision to mothball the distillery for 6 years from 1996 to 2002 and the distillery was purchased by its current owners in 2008.

James Allardice is the name you see on the bottles of Glendronach and with good reason; there may be no one person more responsible for its early success than him. One of the most famous stories about his time promoting Glendronach recalls when he first tried to get the whisky into the bars on Edinburgh's famous Royal Mile. Although impressed by the whiskies the landlords and publicans told James they had already purchased all the stock they needed for the busy season and that they'd keep him in mind for the next year. Disheartened, James retreated to the sanctuary of the room he had rented for his trip to the capital. On his way he was propositioned by two of Edinburgh's well known 'Ladies of the Night'. Not having much money James offered them the chance to try his 'Guid Glendronach'. The ladies were fairly taken with it and James gifted them the remainder of the flagon he had brought. In the next day or so the ladies shared the whisky with their professional friends and their clients and soon, Glendronach was being asked for by name up and down the Royal Mile. Needless to say James stayed in Edinburgh and sold the rest of his stock without any further issues!

There maybe isn't a distillery with a more ardent fan base at the moment than Glendronach. The sherry influenced, bold but light nature is one that will delight pallets all over world and have made it extremely popular. If people are looking at how to bring a distillery to prominence then they couldn't really go wrong with following the blueprint set by Glendronach.
