Benromach

New casks ready to fill at Benromach distillerySince 1999 and Gordon & Macphail's ownership, Benromach's style has set a bold but balanced smoke behind a sweet, malty character that balances with grassy farmyard qualities, light white fruit and a smattering of spices. The first organic whisky came from Benromach, showing a citrusy character and an extra woody depth. Some of the older and stronger bottlings add a sweet barbeque glaze to the palate. Highly recommended.

Benromach is one of those distilleries with a very chequered past. After taking two years get from starting the build to actual production, the distillery closed almost straight away, in 1900, due to financial troubles following the Pattison Crash and F.W. Brickman pulling out of the venture. It wasn't until 1907 that the distillery began production in earnest under Duncan McCallum, continuing by himself after renaming the distillery to 'Forres' for a brief time. Unfortunately that wasn't the solution to the distillery's troubles, and it closed a further three times, under various ownerships, through the Great War, a five year stint in the 1930s and was finally mothballed (seemingly for good) in 1983, following the whisky crash of the early 1980s

Eleven years of being cannibalised by Diageo suggested the end of Benromach, but in 1993 Gordon & Macphail bought what was left of the distillery. It took them 5 years of extensive trials and testing before they decided the time had come to restart production. Benromach celebrated its 100th birthday by being reopened, almost as a whole new distillery, by Prince Charles.

Under the guidance of Gordon & Macphail, Benromach have created a series of age statements including selected stock from Diageo's time, as well as cask strength and heavily peated varieties that have really changed the face of Benromach and given it a new lease of life.
