Glenglassaugh Whisky

Glenglassaugh Distillery, near the fishing village of Portsoy, was established in 1875 by James Moir. Although it had a rich history, it looked like the end for Glenglassaugh when it was mothballed in 1986 but it was saved by a private investors group in 2008 and distilling restarted. Glenglassaugh is a light whisky with a grassy maltiness It is also said to have a restorative and refreshing character.

Glenglassaugh has had quite the turbulent ride since it first boiled up its stills in 1873. By 1908 it had been renovated, sold and then closed. It would not start producing whisky again until 1931. This trend of opening and closing would continue for Glenglassaugh all the way to 1986 when it was swept up in a raft of distillery closures. 17 distilleries closed during 1983 and 1986 but only one of them was to reopen again. To most whisky drinkers surprise this was Glenglassaugh.

In 2008 a group of private investors bought over Glenglassaugh distillery and all the maturing stock. They began production again but were posed with the unique problem of only having a mixture of brand new and extremely old spirit at their disposal. This lead to one of the more interesting whisky ranges on the market with Glenglassaugh releasing some of their fresh new spirit along with a selection of well priced older bottlings from before the distilleries closure. Success was forthcoming and in 2013 the distillery was sold to the Benriach Distillery Co.

Benriach saw a good thing in Glenglassaugh and simply polished this formula for the next few years. They introduced peaty whisky to the Glenglassaugh range and embraced the older stock. In 2016 The Benriach Company was sold to the distilling giant Brown-Forman. It seems, for now at least, that they are also happy to let Glenglassaugh carry on with the good work they've been laying down since being brought back to life in 2008.
