Glen Ord Whisky

A tough whisky to find outside the Asian markets, Glen Ord has a malty base which is built upon by florals, grassy organics and warming spices. The Singleton bottlings of the whisky start out with sweet malt before moving into herbal and perfumed tones. Cinnamon and liquorice add a depth of spices. Older bottlings are scarce, but offer a woody, antique sense with mixed mature fruits and a touch of smoke.

The Glen Ord distillery had fairly common, and rather unstable, beginnings as it was leased out to several owners during its early life. The first distillery expansion didn't go too well either; Alex Mackenzie, then owner, built a brand new still-house in 1878, only to have it burn to the ground shortly after completion.

The distillery stabilised when it was sold to James Watson & Co blenders in 1896, who successfully expanded the distillery during his ownership. In 1923, the distillery passed on, one more time, to John Dewar & Sons, for use in their blends. After Dewar's merged into DCL, and later Diageo, the distillery began releasing single malts, under a confusing number of different names, including Glen Ord, Muir of Ord, Glenordie, Ordie, Ord, and most recently Singleton of Glen Ord.

Glen Ord is one of the few distilleries that is totally self-sufficient in terms of its malted barley production. In fact, Diageo use the site to supply all of its northern sites, including occasionally running peated malt for Talisker and Islay. Since focusing the Singleton on Asian markets, getting Glen Ord outside of travel retail has been a challenge, outside the Manager's Choice collection.
