Blended Whisky

It's not an exaggeration to say that without blended whisky there may not be a Scotch whisky industry.

For every 10 bottles of Scotch whisky sold, blended whisky accounts for 9 of them. That's how important it is. The accessible nature of blended whisky and the versatility it provides for creating other drinks has made it the perfect addition to any bar across the world.

Blended whiskies first started to be produced in the 1800s. Blenders such as Andrew Usher, Johnnie Walker and George Ballantine all started to combine single malt whiskies with grain whiskies to create their own signature blends. By doing this the blenders had a much higher degree of control over the products that they sold and they could also manufacture the flavour profile to whatever they saw fit. Many of the blends that we still see behind bars all around the globe have their roots from this era.

The art of blending should never be underestimated and a blender can make a whisky as complex or as simple as they want it to be. Some blends have as many as 40 different whiskies woven into the fabric of their flavour whilst others may only contain 4 or 5. Either way they are still essential to the Scotch whisky industry.
