Berry Brothers and Rudd 1979 Royal Mile Whiskies Exclusive Single Cask Blend
This, a single cask blend, is a fascinating discovery. Our man at Berry Brothers and Rudd contacted us to say he had a rogue cask of blended whisky. Records did not exist of why and when it was blended and no one was still around who could remember. Why does it exist? Was it blended at birth? Or blended then put back into cask to marry and then forgotten about? We don’t know. All we know is that it was stock from Edrington and it tastes like a delightful mix of Speyside malts (Macallan? Tamdhu? Glenrothes?) and has hardly any obvious grain character (you could believe it is a blended malt). The 385 bottles from the single sherry cask are exclusive to Royal Mile Whiskies and Drinkmonger.
Official Tasting Notes
This sherry butt matured blend offers gentle aromas of wood polish and honeycomb with marmalade on hot toast, walnut and fresh gorse flower emerging with a little time in the glass. The thick, oily palate delivers notes of blood orange, mango, more honey and old sherry wood. A long lingering finish shows wood spice and rich Dundee cake. A superlative dram, enjoyably complex, yet moreishly simple and works perfectly at cask strength.
