Bourbon Whiskey

Bourbon is the most well known of all spirits that hail from America and has been made there for generations. Contrary to popular belief, Bourbon can and is made anywhere in the U.S.A. It is not just limited to Kentucky, although the vast majority does come from the Bluegrass State. All over America new distillers are now producing this famous spirit to critical acclaim.

The laws governing bourbon are seen to be some of the strictest in world for producing whiskey. The mashbill of cereals must consist of 51%-80% corn with the rest being made up of rye, wheat or barley. Each bourbon producer has their own recipe for their mashbill which will create a specific flavour profile for the bourbon. The spirit cannot be distilled any higher than 80% abv, which is a lot lower than Scotch whisky. All bourbon must be placed in a new white oak cask for some period of time but to be carry the label 'straight bourbon' it must be aged in a cask for at least 2 years. The spirit going into these barrels musn't be any stronger than 62.5% abv which means water is added after distillation. In fact, one of the laws that sets bourbon apart is the insistance that nothing (expect water) can be added after distillation.

Bourbon was first made by farmers looking to make a little bit more money from their crops but has now grown into a huge, dynamic industry. With so many different brands and more being released every month it's a category that is just going to keep growing making sure that bourbon only becomes more famous.
